Fuse box replacement in South Croydon swaps an old fuse box for a modern consumer unit with RCD protection. We test your circuits first and give you a free quote before any work begins.

An RCD switches off the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, for example through a damaged cable or a person. RCBOs do the same job for one circuit at a time, so a fault on one circuit doesn't knock out the rest of the house.
Fuse carriers you can pull out with wire inside, a cracked or crowded case and no RCD switches at all are clear signs of an old board. A new one is also needed when there's no space for the extra circuits an extension, electric shower or EV charger needs.
Since 2016, consumer units in homes have had to be made of non-combustible material, which in practice means a metal case. This helps contain a fire if a connection inside ever overheats. Any new board we fit meets the current edition of the wiring regulations, BS 7671.
Before booking, we test the existing circuits, because a new board with RCDs can reveal faults that old fuses ignored. We also check the earthing and the main bonding to gas and water pipes. Any problems are explained and priced, so your free quote covers everything the job needs.
On the day, the power is off while we remove the old fuse box and fit the new consumer unit. Each circuit is connected, labelled and tested before the power goes back on. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is notified to building control as Part P requires.
Call or send a message about the job. For urgent faults we aim to respond the same day, with no call-out charge.
An electrician comes out, checks the job and talks you through the options, then you get a free, no-obligation quote.
When the work is finished, we test everything we've worked on and hand over the right certificate for the job.
For a typical home, the power is off for most of a working day, depending on how many circuits there are and what testing finds. We agree a start time with you in advance, and fridges and freezers stay cold for hours as long as the doors stay shut.
Not by law, but an old fuse box often comes up on a buyer's survey or EICR and can affect negotiations. Replacing it before you sell gives buyers a certificate for the new board and can save questions later. We can inspect first and tell you if it's needed.
We'll explain what the fault is and how to fix it before going any further. Modern protection reacts to small leaks that old fuses never noticed, so an existing fault might stop a circuit working on the new board. We price any repair separately and only carry it out with your agreement.
Not automatically. Plastic consumer units fitted before 2016 were allowed at the time, and many still work safely. But if yours has no RCD protection, shows signs of heat or needs extra circuits, replacing it with a metal unit is the sensible choice. An inspection will tell you.
