Downlights come in different colour temperatures. Warm white, around 2700K to 3000K, suits living rooms and bedrooms, while neutral white, around 4000K, works well in kitchens, utility rooms and bathrooms. Some fittings let you switch between them, which is handy if you're unsure.
Cutting holes in a ceiling can weaken its resistance to fire, so fire-rated downlights are used where the ceiling needs to hold back fire, such as under a bedroom or between flats. Where loft insulation sits over the lights, fittings rated to be covered are needed.
Too few downlights leave dark patches, and too many can feel like an office. Spacing depends on ceiling height, the beam angle of the fittings and what's underneath. We plan rows that line up with worktops, walls and furniture so the light falls where you need it.
We look at the room, the ceiling construction and what's above it, then agree the number, position and type of downlights with you. If you have old halogen spots, we check whether the holes can be reused. You get a free quote that includes the fittings and any new switches or dimmers.
On the day, we mark out the positions, cut the holes, run the cables and fit the downlights and switches. We test the circuit, check the dimming works smoothly and tidy up the dust before we leave. Small marks around old fittings may need touching up with paint.

It depends on the size of the kitchen, the ceiling height and the beam angle of the lights. As a rough guide, downlights are often spaced around a metre to a metre and a half apart. We'll plan the layout so worktops and the hob are well lit.
Yes, as long as each fitting has the right IP rating for its zone. Lights directly above the bath or shower need a higher rating to keep moisture out. We choose suitable fittings and make sure the circuit has RCD protection.
They run much cooler than old halogen spots, which is one reason they're safer and cheaper to run. The driver and heat sink still get warm, so they need a little space around them, and fittings under insulation must be rated for it. We use the right type for each ceiling.
With colour-selectable downlights, yes, often by a small switch on the fitting or by flicking the wall switch. Standard fittings are set at one colour, so you'd need to swap them. If you're not sure what you'll prefer, a selectable fitting gives you the choice later.
